The 2026 midterm election cycle entered its concluding phase with a significant surge in private financial backing for Republican candidates, driven by the personal political committee of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

According to a pre-election report filed with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday, America PAC received more than $76 million in contributions during the first two weeks of October. This influx of capital was intended to bolster Republican efforts as the campaign entered its final stretch before the election.

The committee allocated nearly $43 million of these funds in immediate expenditures during the same two-week period. By the end of the reporting window, America PAC retained approximately $47 million in liquid cash, positioning it with substantial resources for the final days of campaigning.

The Texas Senate race emerged as the primary beneficiary of this funding, attracting $15.2 million in spending. This amount represents double the total the committee had invested in that specific state throughout the summer. Of the Texas-specific funds, $12.4 million was directed toward attack advertisements targeting Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million was used to promote Republican candidate Ken Paxton.

Daily filings released after the initial report indicate an additional $9.1 million was spent against Talarico, bringing his total cycle spending to nearly $28 million. This figure accounts for approximately 40 percent of all funds America PAC has deployed to support or oppose candidates. Furthermore, the committee shifted its strategic focus toward digital platforms, spending $11.4 million on online advertisements in the two-week period, a sum nearly equal to its combined investment in traditional mail and text messaging.

These recent contributions elevate Musk's total giving to Republican political groups this cycle to more than $445 million, according to an analysis of Federal Election Commission records. This establishes him as the largest known individual donor of the midterms, with over $165 million directed specifically to America PAC since July. The committee declined to provide comment on the new expenditures.

Musk, whose major enterprises Tesla and SpaceX are headquartered in Texas, has also actively engaged with the race through social media. On Wednesday, he posted on X that "there is something deeply wrong with Talarico," further describing him as "a creep" and asserting without cited evidence that the Democrat "would vote to take away your kids and transition them." He had previously amplified a false claim that Talarico received treatment at a mental health facility, a point Talarico challenged by stating, "There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator."

The Texas race remains statistically competitive. An Emerson College poll of 1,000 likely voters conducted from October 17 to 19 showed Talarico leading by two points, with 48 percent support compared to 46 percent for Paxton, a margin within the poll's three-point margin of error.

The financial stakes extend beyond the Senate seat. Democrats have indicated that if they gain control of the House, they will investigate Musk's role in the Department of Government Efficiency, his federal contracts, and various conflicts of interest. Additionally, a group of Silicon Valley Democrats sent a letter to the White House on Friday demanding an investigation into SpaceX's Starshield satellite service in Ukraine, promising that the incoming Congress will closely scrutinize federal funds awarded to Musk's businesses.
