Two Cincinnati police officers returned home to recover after being struck while breaking up a crowd near the University of Cincinnati. The incident occurred during the city’s Halloweekend events, disrupting the festive atmosphere in the Corryville neighborhood.
Police were dispatched to Short Vine Street around 11 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. Officers responded to reports of a large group of people yelling near a BP gas station. Emergency communication records indicate that calls regarding shots fired in the 800 block of East University Avenue came in approximately ten minutes prior to the Short Vine Street call.
FOP President Ken Kober confirmed the details on Monday. He stated that the officers were assaulted while attempting to disperse the crowd. One officer received treatment at the scene. The second was transported to a hospital where he received stitches for injuries described as bruises and bumps. Kober noted that both officers were expected to recover fully.
The Cincinnati Police Department’s civil disturbance response team arrived to support the initial officers. Online videos and photos from the scene show at least one officer being physically attacked. Footage also captures bystanders standing on top of fuel pumps while police worked to clear the area.
Kober confirmed that police have made one arrest in connection with the incident. The department has not yet released further details about the suspect or the specific charges filed.
City Councilman Mark Jeffreys commented on the event, describing it as an appalling act of violence. He stated that he unequivocally condemns the attack and emphasized the need to stand united against violence toward those who protect the community. Jeffreys added that his thoughts are with the officers and their families.
The Cincinnati Police Department and city leaders were contacted for additional comment following the release of the incident details.
