OpenAI is reportedly shifting gears to raise massive private capital instead of moving directly to a public listing. Sources tell CNBC that the company is close to securing a new round of funding. This move comes as the lab weighs its options for generating cash.

The proposed deal involves raising up to thirty billion dollars. This would value OpenAI at one point two five trillion dollars before the new money is added. Coatue is reported to be leading the round, with participation from investors in the United Arab Emirates. The terms are still being negotiated, so the final numbers could change.

This development follows a similar report from Bloomberg a month ago. That report suggested a valuation of one point four trillion dollars. The current reports add a new layer to the deal. CNBC notes that the funding from the UAE could be tied to a separate agreement. This agreement would likely secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from that region.

If OpenAI accepts this valuation, it would become the most valuable private company in history. It would break the current records held by other tech giants. This high mark also sets a difficult bar for its upcoming initial public offering. The company filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. Its previous funding round in March valued the ChatGPT maker at eight hundred and fifty two billion dollars post-money.

A valuation this high will likely have ripple effects across the AI industry. Specifically, it could impact the plans of rival Anthropic. Many observers believe Anthropic is closer to going public. Rumors suggest that Anthropic may file its public S-1 document very soon. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between one and two trillion dollars for its debut.

Anthropic raised sixty five billion dollars in May at a valuation of nine hundred and sixty five billion dollars. At the time, many believed that was the last major round before its IPO. It also filed confidential paperwork in June. The competitive landscape is shifting as both companies aim for the public markets.

OpenAI declined to comment on the reports. The outcome of these negotiations will determine if the AI lab stays private for a while longer. For now, the focus remains on the size of the raise and the strategic partnerships involved.
