Chris Rock cites infidelity and porn use in 18-year marriage breakdown

Chris Rock identified infidelity and excessive pornography consumption as primary factors in the end of his marriage to Malaak Compton-Rock. In a new interview for the 2026 Men of the Year issue of GQ, the 61-year-old comedian detailed specific errors in judgment made during their 18 years together.
Rock stated he failed to listen to his wife and did not treat her with kindness. He admitted that watching pornography was another issue that contributed to the relationship's deterioration. The comedian noted that he quit the habit five or six years ago and has not returned to it.
"I was not a great husband," Rock said. He described the period as a time when he tested his limits. The actor compared his experience to a superhero who gets carried away while discovering new abilities. He explained that some individuals must make mistakes and face consequences before understanding they are not invincible.
"I tested my powers. I definitely realized I wasn’t God or anywhere near him, and I was severely humbled, as I should have been," he told the magazine. Rock emphasized that he does not view these actions with pride, calling them a necessary phase he had to endure.
Rock and Compton-Rock married in 1996 and share two daughters, Lola and Zahra. They announced their separation in December 2014 after nearly two decades of marriage. The divorce was finalized in 2016. Compton-Rock previously described the split as a decision reached after much contemplation.
The former couple continues to share family milestones. In May, they reunited to celebrate Zahra’s graduation from the University of Southern California. Since the divorce, Rock dated actress Megalyn Echikunwoke for several years. He was also linked to Carmen Ejogo and Lake Bell before starting a relationship with Simone Henault in March.
Rock’s comments provide a detailed account of the personal choices that led to the end of his first marriage. The interview highlights the specific habits and behaviors he identified as causes for the split.
