The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) is covering the cost of Lyft rides for residents in the D.C. region during the Halloween weekend. The initiative aims to remove the financial barrier to safe travel for impaired drivers on Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31.

The program operates from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. on both days. Residents aged 21 and older can access the service by entering a specific code in the payment section of the Lyft app. Each code provides a credit of up to $15. The codes become available at 9 p.m. on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 at soberride.com.

Lyft’s coverage area for the program includes the City of Alexandria, the District of Columbia, and portions of Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties in Virginia. It also covers the cities of Fairfax, Falls Church, Manassas, and Manassas Park. In Maryland, the service is active in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, along with 15 specific cities including Bowie, Rockville, and Gaithersburg.

Kurt Erickson, WRAP’s president, cited National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data to explain the urgency of the program. He noted that 29.2% of U.S. traffic fatalities in 2024 involved a drunk driver. Erickson highlighted that between 2019 and 2024, 54% of 21 to 34-year-olds killed in U.S. traffic crashes involved drunk drivers, making Halloween a period of particular concern for younger populations.

Last Halloween, 4,056 people in the D.C. region used the SoberRide program. Since 1991, WRAP has provided more than 100,000 safe rides. The organization also runs the program on Super Bowl Sunday, St. Patrick’s Day, Cinco de Mayo, Independence Day, and the winter holidays. Additionally, WRAP is involved with Red Ribbon Week at Alexandria City Public Schools from Oct. 23 to 31.
