Federal investigators determined that a business jet began to break apart in the air before it struck the ground in South Florida, killing all nine people on board. National Transportation Safety Board member Tom Chapman stated during a Monday news conference that evidence suggests the aircraft was disintegrating before impact. He added that wreckage is likely scattered far from the crash site in Greenacres.
The plane was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it encountered severe weather. Air traffic control records show the pilot reported ice accumulation and turbulence that jolted the aircraft by up to 700 feet. The pilot described the ice as light and clear, but the situation deteriorated rapidly as the jet lost altitude at a rate of 10,000 feet per minute.
The pilot declared an emergency and reported an overspeed condition, descending at 20,000 feet per minute. Moments before impact, the pilot radioed that the aircraft was going to crash into the ground. Video footage captured by witnesses shows the jet banking sharply to the right before slamming into the pavement and erupting in flames. The explosion created a crater and sent debris flying across the neighborhood.
Anthony Blackmon, a resident near the crash site, described the scene as chaotic. He noted that debris hit his house and that the road was on fire. Blackmon said he had never expected such an event to happen so close to his home. Palm Beach County Commissioner Joel G. Flores said the county does not have a timeline for when residents can return to their homes. Approximately 77 mobile homes in the area were evacuated to shelters while officials clear the scene.
The identity of one of the pilots was released on Monday. Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, was identified by her stepfather. Filgueiras earned her pilot's license in 2023 while attending West Boca Raton Community High School. Her license authorized her to fly the Learjet model involved in the crash, but it did not grant her command authority for the flight. Her father, Allan Filgueiras, told the Associated Press he was not prepared to discuss the incident.
Palm Beach County Mayor Sara Baxter asked the public to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers. Governor Ron DeSantis described the crash as cataclysmic, comparing the falling aircraft to a missile. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office stated the death investigation is in its early stages. Authorities have not yet released the names of the other eight individuals who died in the crash.
