Law enforcement agencies in north-central Florida moved against a local high school student this week after uncovering a plan to construct homemade explosives. The case began with digital evidence pointing to active communication with a global terrorist network.
Alachua County Sheriff's deputies and FBI agents conducted a joint investigation at the residence of the 15-year-old student from Buchholz High School on Friday. Investigators stated that the teen had been holding online conversations with members and supporters of the Islamic State group. During those exchanges, the student reportedly requested assistance in building drones and explosives intended for an attack on an unspecified location.
The search of the student's digital devices followed a conversation with his parents, who gave permission for the examination. Officers found files detailing instructions for creating explosive devices and chemical compounds, alongside propaganda material from the Islamic State group. On Monday, authorities returned to the home with the parents' consent to conduct a physical search based on the information recovered from the phone.
Inside the bedroom, detectives located two jars that the student identified as containing ingredients for TATP, or triacetone triperoxide. This chemical is known as a sensitive high explosive. The Alachua County Bomb Squad unit responded to the scene to secure the materials before detectives completed their search of the property.
The student now faces a charge for making or attempting to make a destructive device. Prosecutors indicated that additional counts may be filed as the inquiry continues. Family members spoke briefly to reporters off camera, noting that they still had many questions about the investigation and chose not to provide further details.
The case remains under active review by both local and federal teams. No other suspects have been named in the initial reports from the sheriff's office.
