Milestones at Camp Nou: Real Madrid snaps Barca streak with 100th Mbappe goal

Kylian Mbappe scored two goals to reach the 100-goal mark for Real Madrid, a milestone that capped a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday. The French forward's brace was the deciding factor in a match that concluded with Real Madrid taking full points from their rivals.

The result halted Barcelona's nine-game winning streak in La Liga. Had the Catalans won, they would have surpassed a record set by Real Madrid in the 1968-69 season for the best start in the Spanish top flight. The loss also marked Barcelona's second consecutive defeat, following a recent loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. For Real Madrid, the win added one to their all-time head-to-head record, which now stands at 107 wins for Madrid against 106 for Barcelona.

Jose Mourinho took charge of Real Madrid after the club spent two seasons without a trophy. He replaced the previous management structure with the goal of countering Barcelona's recent dominance in the league. The team's performance has improved since early in the campaign, when defeats to Real Betis and Atletico Madrid derailed their momentum. Real Madrid has now won five consecutive matches, including three in La Liga and two in the Champions League.

The victory places Real Madrid third in the league standings after ten matches. The team holds 24 points, trailing Barcelona by three points. Atletico Madrid sits second with 25 points, creating a tight cluster at the top of the table. With just over a quarter of the season completed, the gap between the leaders and Real Madrid remains narrow.

Mbappe, who is 27 years old, has joined the ranks of the all-time leading World Cup scorers and was the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League last season. He currently ranks as the second-best scorer in La Liga this campaign. The Ballon d'Or ceremony for the 2025-26 season is scheduled for Monday in London, where Mbappe is considered a leading candidate.

Mourinho, 63, has won a league title with Chelsea in 2014-15 but has not secured a top-flight title since. During his first stint at Real Madrid, he guided the club to three trophies, including a record-breaking La Liga victory. He returned to the club 13 years after his first spell ended. The manager celebrated the Sunday win with his characteristic knee slide before addressing the media.

"If we win today but lose at El Sardinero, it counts for nothing, because Madrid isn't playing to win at the Camp Nou," Mourinho said. "They're playing to win the championship." He stated that the team's objective is to secure the title rather than focus solely on individual rivalries.

The next fixture for Real Madrid will be at El Sardinero. The squad will prepare for that match following their training sessions in Madrid. The league table remains fluid with multiple teams separated by single-digit point differentials.
