The 2026 Ballon d’Or winner will be announced at the London Palladium in less than 24 hours.
A three-way race defines the final stretch. Lamine Yamal, Kylian Mbappe, and Harry Kane are the primary contenders for football’s top individual honor.
French data firm Avisia released AI projections that place Yamal as the statistical favorite. The model assigns the 19-year-old Barcelona winger a 23 percent probability of winning. Kane follows with 21 percent, while Mbappe and Rodri tie for third at 19 percent each. Lionel Messi rounds out the top five with an 18 percent chance. Avisia noted its accuracy in predicting the 2025 top five, which included winner Ousmane Dembele.
Betting markets tell a different story. Bookmakers view Kane as the outright favorite, estimating his odds at roughly 70 percent. This divergence highlights a split between algorithmic performance metrics and market sentiment ahead of the ceremony.
Public opinion among players is divided. Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone supports Messi, stating the Argentine "played at his age" after the World Cup. Marco Materazzi agreed, calling Messi’s performance at 38 "in a different league." Jude Bellingham backed Kane, calling him "honest and hard-working." Anthony Gordon praised Yamal, describing his young career as "ridiculous" and "on a whole other level." Aurelien Tchouameni supported Mbappe, citing his "incredible season."
Statistical records favor Mbappe. He leads La Liga with 25 goals and the Champions League with 15. He also won the World Cup Golden Boot and set a record for most World Cup goals with 12. Kane scored 73 goals last season, the highest total since Messi’s 82 in 2011-12.
Trophy success tips the scale for Yamal. He won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Mbappe and Kane failed to secure major titles, with Kane’s England reaching only third place at the World Cup. Only four of the last 19 Ballon d’Or winners did not win a major tournament. Yamal aims to become the youngest winner, surpassing Brazilian Ronaldo, who was 21 in 1997.
