A 42-year-old Chicago woman is facing felony charges after she called 911 to report her own dangerous driving on a southern Indiana highway. Meisha Thomas was arrested on Sunday morning after troopers found her swerving across lanes while intoxicated.
Indiana State Police received the call just after 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1. Thomas, of Chicago, spoke to dispatchers with slurred speech and provided confusing information. The dispatchers tracked her vehicle as she drove southbound on Interstate 65 near the Lowell exit in southern Lake County.
A trooper located the car in Jasper County, where Thomas was driving between 30 and 50 miles per hour in a 70 mph zone. The vehicle was swerving and blocking traffic, forcing other drivers to brake abruptly to avoid a collision. Thomas initially ignored the police lights and sirens before eventually pulling over in the left lane.
Upon contact, troopers noted Thomas had slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, and poor coordination. She also had a strong smell of alcohol. Thomas told officers she had left the casino in Gary and was heading home to Chicago. Troopers determined she had actually driven approximately 36 miles in the wrong direction.
Police said Thomas was too impaired to complete field sobriety tests. She refused the implied consent test, a standard procedure for drivers suspected of intoxication. Officers later secured a search warrant and collected a blood sample at a local hospital. During the interaction, Thomas made repeated sexual advances toward the trooper, including attempting to kiss him while he fastened her seatbelt. She continued these actions despite multiple requests to stop.
Thomas was booked into Jasper County Jail. She faces one felony charge of battery against a public safety official. She also faces three misdemeanor charges: operating a vehicle while intoxicated and endangering a person, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated with reckless driving. State police have not announced a bail amount or a specific court date.
