Federal immigration agents in North Hollywood, California, used physical force to detain a man on Friday morning, an incident that has prompted local officials to demand an explanation.
The arrest occurred on November 6, 2026, in a residential area. Video footage uploaded to social media shows three masked agents lifting a handcuffed man by his arms and legs. The man, identified by his family as 27-year-old Angel Luis Gonzalez Lobo, is from Venezuela. His brother stated that the family did not know why he was taken into custody.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic. After the initial detention, agents moved the man toward a vehicle. One witness, Damari Butler, who was filming the event, said he saw agents appear to tase the man while he was on the ground. Butler noted that the agents then hogtied the man and placed him in a truck. A second vehicle arrived on the scene as agents worked to load the detainee.
The video also captures a separate interaction between an agent and a neighbor walking two dogs on the sidewalk. The neighbor picked up a canister of pepper spray from the ground before throwing it aside. He told officers, "I thought it was his!" An agent then approached the man, appeared to point a gun at his face, and pushed him into a bush. The neighbor appeared to be unarmed during the encounter.
Butler described the agent's actions as intense, stating that the gun was held to the man's face. "At that point, I'm going to be honest with you, I thought that was the end for him," Butler said. He added that the agent eventually walked back to the detained man on the ground. Butler characterized the overall scene as lacking clear direction, saying it felt as if agents were prepared to use excessive force to complete their mission.
Another resident, Nancy, expressed fear for her safety and her son during the incident. "I just didn't feel safe walking outside my apartment building," she said. She described the event as sad and noted that she was worried for the man being dragged as well as for herself.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass responded to the incident with a statement calling the behavior unacceptable. She said she was engaging the Attorney General’s Office to investigate and prosecute any wrongdoing by the federal agents. Bass also referred the matter to the Office of U.S. Rep. Robert Garcia, who leads Democratic oversight on federal immigration enforcement. Bass highlighted that new state laws have implemented accountability measures for ICE agents.
Councilwoman and mayoral candidate Nithya Raman posted on social media that she was outraged by the reports. She described Los Angeles as not being a playground for the Trump regime’s operations and said residents should not have to live in fear when going to work or school.
The Department of Homeland Security was contacted for information regarding the arrest and the use of force but had not responded as of the publication of this report. The incident has drawn attention to the methods used by federal agents in the city.
The video of the detention and the neighbor interaction has been viewed by thousands of online users. Local leaders are now waiting for a formal response from federal authorities regarding the specific protocols followed during the arrest.
