Five people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after two separate shootings occurred near the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing, Michigan, on Halloween night.

East Lansing Police Chief Jennifer Brown detailed the events at a press conference on Sunday afternoon. Officers first responded to a reported shooting at the intersection of M.A.C. Avenue and Linden Street. Multiple shots were fired in that incident. Three people were transported to the hospital with gunshot wounds. Two of those victims are in stable condition. The condition of the third victim was not immediately known.

Later that same night, police responded to a second shooting in the area of Stoddard and Frye Avenues. Two additional people were shot in that incident. Both victims are listed in stable condition. Brown stated that multiple guns were recovered from the second scene. Officials have not determined if those recovered weapons were used in the shooting.

Brown said several individuals were taken into custody in connection with the violence. Police have not stated whether the two shootings are linked. It is also unclear if any of the five victims are students at Michigan State University.

A spokesperson for the university said the Department of Police and Public Safety assisted East Lansing Police in the response. The spokesperson noted that the criminal activity did not involve a threat to the campus and did not take place on university property.

The East Lansing Fire Department responded to 91 total incidents over a 24-hour span. That total included 75 incidents during the Halloween night timeframe.
