Former President Barack Obama’s casual remark about the White House interior has triggered a coordinated response from the Trump administration, shifting the focus of the midterm campaign from policy disputes to restaurant branding.

During a campaign rally in Ohio on Saturday, Obama compared the gilded decor of the Trump White House to a Cheesecake Factory that opened in the palace of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. He described the space as having gold everywhere and joked that the current administration had been supergluing gold medallions to the Oval Office mantel.

President Donald Trump addressed the comment shortly after, telling reporters that he had repaired the White House using the finest artisans in the world. He stated that the building is now in the best condition it has seen since 1792 and characterized Obama as not a smart guy.

Vice President JD Vance joined the response on the social media platform X, accusing Obama of being super elitist without even trying. The administration’s official X account posted a photograph of the restaurant’s large menu, noting that the only thing bigger than the menu is the list of Trump’s accomplishments.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent visited a Cheesecake Factory location near the White House on Monday. After eating a French Dip Cheeseburger, he told journalists that he had a great meal and suggested the Martha’s Vineyard set give the chain a try. He referenced the Obama family’s known holiday habits on the exclusive island.

Bessent also commented on the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, describing it as looking like Darth Vader’s tomb. This remark followed his role as a former hedge fund manager and added a layer of personal critique to the government’s response.

Obama returned to the topic at a rally in Georgia on Wednesday. He noted that the White House was more upset about the restaurant joke than about inflation or interest rates. He said the administration mobilized a whole of government response to the quip rather than to the cost of living.

Obama pointed out that the White House called Treasury Secretary Bessent about the joke. He argued that the person in charge of the economy should be focused on making life more affordable and lowering interest rates, not holding a press conference in front of a restaurant.

The former president emphasized his personal connection to the brand, stating he is the father of two daughters. He asked if he could have survived their childhood without visiting the restaurant, reinforcing his image as a regular patron.

The discussion of dining costs continued later in the week when Trump spoke at a rally in Texas. He told supporters that the $5,000 he has promised to every adult citizen if Republicans keep Congress could be spent on dining out at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. He joked that the money would only buy a hamburger and maybe a small dessert, before advising price-conscious voters not to go there.
