President Donald Trump described Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) as having been "a little bit heavier" during a campaign rally in Dubuque on Sunday. The remarks came during a speech supporting Hinson's Senate bid and other Iowa Republicans.
The president acknowledged that Hinson had previously asked him to avoid the topic. "I shouldn't say this. It's inappropriate," Trump told the crowd. "Ashley said, 'Please, sir, don't do this.'" He proceeded to explain that she knew the literal weight on her shoulders and the importance of her work.
Trump stated that Hinson lost weight "the old-fashioned way" rather than using injections. He mimed an injection while referring to specific drugs used for weight loss. A protester interrupted him at that moment, prompting the president to complain that they always stop him right in the middle of his punchline.
After the crowd chanted "USA" while the protester was removed, Trump returned to his point. He said Hinson followed a regimen and put herself in shape. "She went on a regimen. She put herself in shape. She's in perfect shape," he said. He added that she was great before, but she improved her physique for her constituents.
The president admitted he had put on a couple of pounds and wondered how Hinson managed her own weight. This incident follows recent comments Trump made about other candidates' bodies. In previous weeks, he focused specifically on Sen. Jon Husted (R-Ohio), describing the senator as having a "great ass, very powerful ass."
