For many voters in North Texas, the upcoming midterm election will proceed as usual, but for one congressman, the campaign has taken on a more guarded tone. Representative Keith Self, who is seeking a third term in office, has confirmed that his security posture has been heightened following the arrest of a local teenager. The change in routine stems from federal authorities uncovering a specific plan to target the lawmaker during a public event, a development that has forced the campaign to adjust its daily operations while the candidate continues to campaign across the state.
According to campaign officials, the FBI detained the 17-year-old resident of McKinney on October 5. The congressman’s team was not immediately aware of the detention. Instead, they learned of the arrest through the U.S. Capitol Police the following day, on October 6. Investigators indicated that the teen had been under surveillance by federal agents and was believed to be radicalized. The details provided to the campaign suggest the suspect was planning a terrorist attack in the name of ISIS, with the specific goal of targeting Self.
The planned attack was set to coincide with a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was expected to draw significant attention, including former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. Because the target date was imminent, the campaign moved quickly to assess the threat level. Although the suspect was already in custody, the team treated the situation with urgency to determine if the plot involved additional collaborators or if it was the work of a lone individual.
Representative Self noted that his background in the military influenced his reaction to the news. Having served in combat zones multiple times, he described his response as measured rather than panicked. He explained that while the news was serious, the fact that the suspect had already been arrested allowed for a calculated approach. He stated that he was focused on understanding the scope of the threat, specifically whether the teen was acting alone, which allowed him to maintain a sense of calm that he believes might differ from that of colleagues without similar experience.
The congressman’s wife, who has spent 25 years as a military spouse, also played a role in the family’s response to the incident. Self noted that she has supported him through multiple deployments and understands the risks inherent in public service. He emphasized that while he has received threats in the past, this was the first time a threat had escalated to the point of an arrest. He described the incident as distinct from previous interactions because of the formal involvement of law enforcement and the specificity of the planned attack.
Despite the heightened security concerns, Representative Self attended the October 17 fundraiser as scheduled. He participated fully in the event, judging 19 different varieties of chili and three pots of beans. He reported that the day went smoothly and that no incident occurred. Following the event, the campaign maintained its regular schedule, with the congressman continuing to greet voters and meet with constituents. He stated that the arrest would not deter him from his efforts to communicate with the American people about the political ideologies he opposes.
The arrest occurs at a time when Representative Self has taken a prominent stance on specific policy issues. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and opposing its implementation in the United States. The resolution asserts that the U.S. Constitution remains the supreme law of the land. This legislative move aligns with broader debates in his district, which includes McKinney, where the local government recently approved a site plan for the expansion of a mosque. That decision in August followed hours of contentious public comment and was later followed by a recall effort against several city council members.
The political rivalry in the district has also drawn attention to the incident. Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the midterm election, condemned the alleged assassination plot in a post on social media. While the teen’s identity has not been publicly released as the investigation continues, the case has highlighted the intersection of local political debates and national security concerns. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further details but had not responded as of the time of reporting.
The situation underscores the challenges faced by elected officials balancing public visibility with personal safety. As early voting continues across the state, the campaign has indicated it will remain vigilant. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of the candidate and his team while maintaining the momentum of a campaign that has entered its final critical phase.
