Lorain County Truckers Report $800 Fill-Ups as Diesel Hits Record Highs

Diesel costs in Northeast Ohio have reached record levels, forcing truckers in Lorain County to absorb higher expenses or adjust their rates for clients. The price surge is attributed to global supply disruptions and rising oil costs linked to conflicts in Ukraine and Iran.

Keith, a semi-truck owner-operator in Avon, stated that his weekly fuel budget has grown to more than $2,000. He noted that a full tank, which cost approximately $400 previously, now requires more than $700. This increase represents a direct shift in his operational overhead.

The added expense is being transferred to the end consumer, according to Keith. He explained that stores and businesses must pay haulers more to cover the fuel difference, which results in higher prices for goods. "All these places, the stores and everything, they got to pay more to us to haul it because they got to make up our fuel difference," Keith said. "So now the consumer has to pay the difference."

Andrew, another local trucker, described the volatile price trend, noting that rates rose, dipped, and have now climbed again. His most recent refueling purchase included 142 gallons. With his discount applied, the total cost for that fill-up was $804.

AAA data shows the current average diesel price is about $6.50 per gallon. A year ago, the average stood at about $3.70. Keith summarized the current financial situation for drivers with a single word: "ridiculous."
