Hair care professionals have established a firm timeline for wearing braided styles to prevent damage to natural hair.

The debate over the lifespan of protective styles has grown as more people choose braids for their versatility. Curl Centric, an independent publisher focused on natural hair health, advises that braids with extensions should remain in place for four to six weeks. The organization states that eight weeks is the absolute maximum duration before the risk of severe matting and breakage rises. For styles without extensions, such as cornrows and Fulani braids, the recommended window is shorter, typically spanning three to five weeks. Box braids and micro braids fall into the four to six week category, while braid-in locs generally last three to six weeks.

These guidelines align with earlier advice from industry specialists. Tatiana Dudley, a hair care specialist, told TODAY in 2024 that keeping protective styles beyond their recommended lifespan places unnecessary stress on strands. She noted that styles without extensions should generally last one to four weeks. "Anything beyond six weeks runs the risk of breakage," Dudley said. Yasmine Young, owner of Diaspora Salon, provided similar guidance to TODAY in 2024, emphasizing comfort as a primary metric for when to remove a style. "You should not feel pulling or tugging once the braids are in," Young said.

The biological mechanism behind the timeline involves natural shedding. Hair continues to shed while braided, but the loose strands become trapped within the style rather than falling away during washing. Over time, these accumulated strands tangle around the roots. This process leads to matting and can make the removal process difficult, often resulting in unnecessary breakage. Niara Alexis, a Chicago-based TikTok content creator, shared her personal routine in 2024, noting that she keeps her braids in for five to six weeks to prevent tension on new growth.

Maintenance practices are scheduled to support the hair during this period. Experts recommend regular cleansing of the scalp to remove sweat and product buildup without disturbing the braids. Moisturizing with lightweight products helps prevent dryness. Sleep protection, such as silk or satin bonnets, is advised to reduce friction. Individuals are encouraged to monitor their scalp for irritation or pain, which signals that the style should be removed sooner than the scheduled date.
