Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, creating a window for consumers to purchase and complete shorter video games within two days. Four titles from prominent horror franchises are currently available at discounted prices or for free on the PlayStation Store. These options allow players to engage with the genre during the holiday weekend without a major financial commitment.
The Resident Evil series represents a large portion of the available options. The remake of Resident Evil 4 is currently on sale. The original title was released for the PlayStation 2, Wii, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 4 before the current version launched for the PlayStation 5. The remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 also appear frequently on digital storefronts. Resident Evil: Village is accessible for free through the PlayStation game catalog. Resident Evil VII: Biohazard is another available option. A new entry, Resident Evil: Requiem, released earlier this year and is also discounted. Most titles in the series feature short playtimes suitable for a weekend.
Alien: Isolation is another title currently on sale. The game follows Amanda Ripley, the daughter of Ellen Ripley, as she investigates a space station containing the black box from the Nostromo. The player must survive encounters with a xenomorph and other threats. The game is noted for its difficulty, requiring players to outwit the creature rather than defeat it. A sequel to Alien: Isolation is scheduled for release next year.
Doki Doki Literature Club offers a shorter experience with a runtime of approximately four hours. The title began as a visual novel in 2017 where the player joins a literature club at the request of a friend named Sayori. The gameplay shifts from a standard narrative structure to a psychological horror format. The game deconstructs visual novel elements while incorporating psychological and analog horror themes. Its short duration allows for completion in a single sitting.
Until Dawn provides an interactive horror-adventure experience based on slasher movie tropes. The game features a choose-your-own-adventure structure where player decisions determine the survival of various characters. Multiple endings and story paths exist within the title. Released in 2015, the game functions as a single-player experience or a group activity where participants vote on character decisions. The game is designed to be replayable due to its branching narrative paths.
All four titles are currently listed on the PlayStation Store. The availability of these games at reduced costs coincides with the holiday period. The source notes that the current era of horror gaming offers a wide selection of titles. Players can utilize the weekend to experience these games before the holiday concludes.
