Derry City confirmed on Tuesday that James McClean's contract has been terminated by mutual consent, ending his second spell with the club. The former Republic of Ireland international had returned to the Candystripes for the 2026 season but has not appeared on the pitch since July, a period marked by a widely publicized disagreement between the player and the management.
Before this final agreement, the club had attempted to end the contract based on McClean's physical condition. At that time, the midfielder described the period as one of the most difficult of his life, both personally and professionally. His first tenure at Derry City spanned from 2008 to 2011, a period that preceded a long career abroad.
In a statement posted to the club's official website, McClean expressed relief that the matter was resolved. He acknowledged that his return did not unfold as he had hoped, though he noted that Derry City FC would always hold a special place in his heart. He thanked the fans for their support and wished the squad, management, and staff the best for the future. Specifically, he offered good luck to the team in the upcoming FAI Cup final against Waterford FC.
Philip O'Doherty, the chairman of Derry City, responded with his own statement. He thanked McClean for his dedication to the hometown club and highlighted his 103 senior caps for the Republic of Ireland as a remarkable milestone. O'Doherty formally acknowledged McClean's contribution to Irish football and wished him well. Both the club and McClean stated they would make no further comments on the situation.
The decision comes as Derry City prepares for their next major fixture. The team secured a top half finish in the SSE Airtricty League this season. They are scheduled to face Waterford United in the Club Orange Men's FAI Cup final next Sunday, 8 November, at the Aviva Stadium.
After his initial departure from Derry City, McClean played for several clubs in England and Wales. His career included spells at Sunderland, Wigan Athletic, West Bromwich Albion, and Wrexham AFC before his return to the Brandywell this year.
