Angel Reese secured a spot in WNBA Finals history on Thursday when her 14 rebounds in Game 6 pushed her series total to 78. The mark surpassed the previous record of 75 set by Sylvia Fowles in 2017. The performance helped the Atlanta Dream defeat the Golden State Valkyries 80-69, forcing a first-ever Game 7 in the league's championship series.

Reese had faced difficulty in the prior two contests, making only four of 20 shots. According to the Associated Press, she acknowledged the need to adjust her mentality to help her team win rather than focusing solely on personal statistics. Her Game 6 contribution included 15 points and six assists alongside the record-setting rebounding effort.

The Dream entered Thursday's contest needing a victory to avoid elimination after the Valkyries held a 3-2 series lead. Atlanta opened the game with a 32-point first quarter, setting a WNBA Finals record for an opening period. The team built a 46-26 halftime lead at State Farm Arena. Golden State attempted to rally in the second half, but the Dream maintained control, extending their advantage to 25 points before closing out the 80-69 victory.

Both franchises will meet for the championship on Saturday, October 31, in California. This will be the first time a WNBA Finals series has reached a decisive seventh game. Each team is chasing its first league title. The Dream have the chance to complete a comeback from the brink of elimination. The Valkyries have the opportunity to close out the series and claim the trophy.

Reese's rebounding total now stands at 78 through six games. She has the opportunity to extend the record during the final game. Her performance in Game 6 followed a stretch where critics questioned her offensive consistency. The Atlanta team credited her for her effort in battling for possessions and creating opportunities for teammates during the crucial matchup.

The series is now tied 3-3. The deciding game will determine which franchise takes the championship. Reese's statistical achievement adds to the narrative of the final contest. The two teams will face off in California to determine the winner of the 2026 WNBA season.
