Adam Hamilton won the U.S. Senate seat from Kansas on Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

The victory marks a shift for a state that has not sent a Democrat to the Senate since 1932. Hamilton, a Methodist pastor, told NPR's Michel Martin that voters prioritized economic concerns and a change in tone over party loyalty. He cited rising costs, tariffs, and the war in Iran as key drivers of his win.

Hamilton, who was registered as a Republican until earlier this year, said he heard a consistent message from voters across the state. They expressed fatigue with what he described as the hyperpolarization in Washington. He recalled meeting a Republican voter who had supported the party in 46 consecutive elections before choosing Hamilton. That voter told him Washington had become cruel and indecent.

In Greensburg, Kansas, a woman described how political division had fractured family relationships. She asked Hamilton to help Americans stop hating one another. "I really want you to help us remember that we're fellow human beings," Hamilton recalled her saying.

Hamilton said he intends to work across party lines and reach more religious voters. He plans to build a close relationship with incumbent Republican Sen. Jerry Moran. "I want to be his best friend in Washington," Hamilton said, describing his goal to demonstrate that the two parties can collaborate effectively.

The election result positions Hamilton as a new voice in the Senate, representing a state that voted heavily for the Republican presidential candidate in the same cycle.
