Dave Grohl stated that he and Taylor Hawkins were destined to be lifelong friends from their initial encounter. The Foo Fighters frontman shared this recollection during an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, detailing the specific moment the late drummer entered his life.

Hawkins joined the band in March 1997. He departed from Alanis Morissette's group that same month to fill the drum seat. At the time, the Foo Fighters were finalizing production on their second studio album, The Colour and the Shape.

Grohl described meeting Hawkins backstage at a festival. He recalled the drummer approaching him as a blond surfer type. Hawkins told Grohl he loved the band and that they were awesome. Grohl said he immediately knew the two would be best friends for the rest of their lives.

The two artists had parallel careers in the mid-1990s. Grohl noted that their first records released around the same time. This overlap led to shared appearances at festivals and radio shows. Those events created the environment for their backstage introduction.

Hawkins died at age 50 in 2022. His death occurred hours before the band was scheduled to perform in Colombia. Grohl spoke to MOJO magazine in March 2026 about the impact of that loss. He said losing Hawkins made him question everything about life. He described the event as unfair and said it threw their world upside down.

Friends and fans marked the fourth anniversary of Hawkins' death in March 2026. Photographer Sarah Jeynes shared a series of images to honor the drummer. The collection included photos from their first meeting in 2005.
