Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut is in the hospital after suffering a stroke. His office released the news on Sunday.
Allison Herwitt, the senator’s chief of staff, said Murphy began feeling numbness in his arm on Saturday. He was at a hockey game with his son when the symptoms started. Medical staff at a local hospital diagnosed the stroke.
Herwitt stated that Murphy was moved to Johns Hopkins Hospital for closer monitoring. She added that he is responding well to treatment. The team expects him to make a complete recovery.
Murphy is 53 years old. He has served as a key campaign supporter for Democratic candidates during the midterm election cycle. He is also seen as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential nomination. His legislative focus includes foreign policy and oversight of the executive branch.
The senator recently returned from a trip to the Middle East. He warned President Trump would escalate military action against Iran after the midterm elections ended.
Murphy joins a list of lawmakers dealing with health issues this year. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky missed months of work due to a hospital stay and rehab. Rep. Tom Kean of New Jersey took time off for depression treatment.
In 2022, three other Democrats suffered strokes. They were Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and then-Senate candidate John Fetterman.
