Chris Brown received an eight-month prison sentence on October 26, but the time will not be served immediately. Judge Tony Baumgartner at Southwark Crown Court in London suspended the sentence for 12 months. The verdict follows a guilty plea to affray, a public order offense, arising from a confrontation at Tape nightclub in February 2023.
Prosecutors presented surveillance footage of the incident, which lasted approximately 20 seconds. Video showed Brown striking music producer Abraham Diaw twice in the head with a tequila bottle. The judge noted the danger of using a glass vessel against a human skull but accepted that the repeated blows could have caused worse injuries.
Baumgartner stated that Brown's fame did not grant him special treatment. The judge cited several factors in deciding to suspend the sentence, including Brown's guilty plea, his stable employment, and his charitable work. Although the court acknowledged previous convictions, the judge noted that Brown had maintained a clean record in recent years.
Brown's vocal coach and friend, Omololu Akinlolu, was sentenced in the same hearing. Akinlolu also pleaded guilty to affray and received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months. Both men had previously faced more serious charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Those charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
The suspended sentence creates a conditional period of 12 months. If Brown violates the court's conditions during that window, the judge can activate the sentence and require him to serve the eight months in prison. Akinlolu faces a similar 12-month window for his four-month term.
Fans gathered outside the courthouse to watch the proceedings. Supporters cheered as Brown left the building, while other onlookers questioned the severity of the outcome. The London case adds to Brown's legal history, which includes a 2009 guilty plea for assaulting Rihanna and five years of probation.
The incident at Tape nightclub remains a distinct legal matter from Brown's earlier US cases. The suspended terms for both Brown and Akinlolu begin from the date of sentencing. No immediate change to their release status was announced beyond the standard suspension terms.
