Delco Christian advanced to its third state tournament appearance in four seasons after defeating No. 3 Dock Mennonite 1-0 on Tuesday night at Upper Dublin High School. The win marks the Knights' second consecutive district championship.
The decisive moment arrived in the 27th minute. Senior midfielder Matteo DeBellis, who often plays a defensive holding role for the team, broke through the Dock defense and fired a shot from 16 yards out. The ball deflected off Dock center back Noah Burleigh and into the net, giving Delco Christian a 1-0 lead.
Delco Christian (17-2-1) controlled the majority of the match. The Knights forced six saves from Dock goalkeeper Ethan Kratz. One of the best chances for the visitors came when forward Justin Ma drove a shot that Kratz parried with his right hand in the second half.
Dock Mennonite (13-5-2) had beaten Delco Christian 2-1 on Oct. 5 earlier in the season. The loss on Tuesday avenges that setback for the Knights. Dock will play MaST Charter from District 12 on Thursday in a regional match for a chance to reach the state tournament.
DeBellis described the team's approach as one of patience. He noted that his role has shifted over the years from an attacking winger as a freshman to a holding midfielder who provides structure. He said the key was choosing the right moment to make a run forward.
"It’s really just about patience throughout the game," DeBellis said. "Obviously, you don’t want to push up and leave a gap in the midfield for them to run down. Also, I’ve been playing a lot of center back this year, so making runs up from there, it’s really about choosing the moment and trying to capitalize on the moment."
The game featured a hard-fought second half. Delco Christian midfielder Cole Matthews received his second yellow card in the 77th minute. Under PIAA rules, this resulted in a soft red card, allowing Delco Christian to continue playing with 11 players while Matthews finished the game without facing an automatic suspension.
Dock Mennonite created few chances in the final minutes. Their best opportunity came in the final 90 seconds when forward Cade Jackson set up Miguel Martin for a shot that went wide. Delco Christian goalkeeper Carter Dill made only one save, rushing out to stop an attempt from Jackson in the first half.
DeBellis credited the coaching staff's game plan for the team's success. He stated that the players stuck to the strategy after taking the lead and did not let the opposing fans influence their play.
"We had a game plan in the beginning of the game," DeBellis said. "We really stuck to it well, I thought, and we didn’t let anyone get in our heads. We didn’t let their fans get in our heads. We didn’t stray from the game plan. So the coaches put in a good game plan, and once we went up 1-0, stuck to the game plan. We didn’t really change too much, and it worked out for us."
The Knights' experience in high-pressure games helped them maintain composure. DeBellis said that past playoff performances allow him to keep his head level during intense moments, such as hard tackles or critical plays.
