Louisville defeated Stanford 52-24 on Saturday in a decisive Atlantic Coast Conference matchup.
The Cardinals relied on a balanced offense to control the game. Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz threw for 250 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 62 yards and a 33-yard gain that set up a one-yard scoring run. That touchdown gave Louisville the lead for the final time in the third quarter.
Tre Richardson was the primary target in the passing game. He caught 10 passes for 140 yards. Isaac Brown led the ground attack with 139 yards. Brown finished the game with a 75-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The team totaled 545 yards of offense. That total included 249 aerial yards and 296 rushing yards.
Stanford took the lead twice during the second quarter. The Cardinal tied the score at 24 in the third quarter. Louisville then scored 28 unanswered points to close out the contest. The home team converted back-to-back turnovers into scores during that stretch. Davis Warren threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns for Stanford. One of those scores was a 75-yard pass to Aiden Black in the second quarter.
Coach Brian Brohm noted that his team played better in the second half. He credited a timely interception for shifting momentum. Brohm said the defense gave the offense two scores' worth of advantage. He emphasized that conference games require consistent effort regardless of preseason expectations.
Stanford's road struggles continued with this loss. The Cardinal now have a 0-4 record in away games this season. This loss extends their road losing streak to 15 games. That is the longest active losing streak in the Football Bowl Subdivision. Stanford had been outscored 150-17 in their previous three road games. They matched that point deficit in the first half before scoring more in the second half.
Louisville is now 5-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. The team is missing wide receiver Lawayne McCoy. He will be out for an extended period due to a knee injury. McCoy had caught 25 passes for 513 yards and four touchdowns in the first seven games. Louisville plays at Georgia Tech next Saturday. Stanford travels to Virginia Tech on Nov. 14.
